Four major online gambling companies have decided to challenge the findings reported by the Swedish government this month by investing in their own inquires to counter information published last week. Though the Swedish government has recommended that changes be made to the monopolistic structure currently in place for the nation, operators Unibet, Expekt, Ladbrokes and Betsson have officially disagreed with the proposals and prefer to have their own findings considered before action is taken.

State owned Svenska Spel might actually benefit from the disagreement as they currently stand as the state-owned source for online gambling. Their current contract expires in 2011, and examinations are in process as to whether the nation would benefit more from continuing national control over online casinos, or whether a more open commercial basis would result in financial benefit for Sweden. The findings by the government encourage changes for the renewal in 2011, but failed to take into consideration online poker, and online casinos, despite their dominance in the online gambling industry. The four companies announced their difference of opinion during a press conference in Stockholm.

Unibet, Expekt, Betsson and Ladbrokes proposed instead that the gambling problems that’ve made news over the last 18 months be addressed in other ways besides overhauling a workable system. Serious licensing for existing state-programs would allow the issues to be resolved without overtly disrupting the entire national arrangement for online gambling. Their motivations, however, were unclear, as the monopolies wouldn’t necessarily be in a losing position even with nationally suggested changes.

Pontus Lindwall, the chief executive for billion-dollar power Betsson, implied that their counter proposals were driven by the need to protect state finances. Though final decisions have no been made, the disagreement has assuredly postponed any new contracts being signed in the next few months.
