Despite the considerable drops in income across the board for online gambling and casino industries, there is one region of the world where betting is expected to actually increase in 2009. The Sydney Morning Herald announced this week that a report made by IBIS World Research in Australia has predicted an increase in horse and sports betting over the next year, despite financial crises all over the world.

The irony has a perfectly logical explanation, however, in that the Australian horse betting sector has suffered tremendous losses over the 2007/2008 fiscal year due to the influx of equine influenza. With so many horses falling ill in one continent over a relatively short period of time, the results were devastating for horse and sports bettors down under. Next year, 2009, shows predictions of inevitable growth, estimated at about an increase of 11.9%. The jump will be a welcome respite after the 9.3% loss over the last year, according to industry analyst Angela Kidson of IBIS World.

"It's rebounding from (fiscal) 2008 which was a terrible year for them with the equine influenza," Kidson said. "That hit the industry very hard: race numbers were down 16 percent."

Throughout the 2009/2010 fiscal year, the balance of bounce back and economic recessions should average out to about a 2.5% rate of growth for online gambling related to Australian horse racing. The numbers are conservative and could be much higher, depending on the success of plans to utilize interactive television betting sites to boost popularity.
