The online gambling wars being waged in the US have lost a valuable troop this week with news that the legalization initiative in New Hampshire has gone under, finally having succumbed to the pressures and political opposition against it. Though it was nearly all the way through, the venture has been pushed back to the point of debate once more, with more experts opining that the likelihood of passage has gone down the drains than ever before.

According to reports, the project has been all of but officially scrapped by the New Hampshire Lottery Commission this week, in spite of the progress that they had made in previous months. In fact, everything was geared and ready for the official launch of PlayNowNH, until the state’s lawmakers asked for a respite in order to further debate the risks associated with online gambling, and giving the opposition the opportunity they needed to convince them the whole idea was a bad one.

Of course, red tape had something to do with it, as some lawmakers expressed concerns that the financial plan for the project were not included and laid out in the budget debates earlier this year, prior to the proposal ever being seriously on the table. The website PlayNowNH would not have even been a full service internet casino, instead offering only an online version of scratch card and lottery games already offered through the NH Lottery Commission. It was designed to be a convenient option for existing players, and would have provided the state’s budget with millions in much needed funds.

The games would have come in an arrangement of themes, and titles, though the outcomes would all have been predetermined – ie scratch card games – when purchased. "It was my belief that the game would have produced modest revenue,” said Charles McIntyre, the executive director for the Commission. "In light of our other challenges at this time, it is clear that the resources needed to introduce and sustain a product like PlayNowNH would be a poor return on investment."
