While the legislators for the State of
Massachusetts go into battle against their own Governor in relation that
would launch three casinos and some slot parlors, the online gambling
industry is also keeping an eye on the development of the case in New
Jersey, which, once resolved, could potentially mean the legalization of
sports betting in the state. The case is plodding along nicely, and with
little ground to go on to defend the prohibition against sports betting,
the State of New Jersey’s legal team is instead resorting to a defense of
‘no legal standing’ and ‘no grounds for claims,’ exciting some industry
experts. The lawsuit against the state has been a collaboration between online gambling support groups such as iMEGA, the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, and government representatives, like State Senator Ray Lesniak. Lesniak has become somewhat of a hero in the internet gambling world for his willingness to take on such a case, attempting to overturn the statutes laid out by the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which bans wagering on sporting events in New Jersey. It’s a sore subject for the region, as their gambling city, Atlantic City, can do little to compete with Las Vegas while they are unable to host sports betting. The case has already made it into the courtroom, and is now under consideration by the US District Court of New Jersey. Garrett E Brown is presiding as judge over the lawsuit; he has served as the Chief Judge for the District Court since 2005. Eric H Holder is listed as the lead on defense, Attorney General for the White House. |
