More news hits the online gambling forums this week from the internet casino king William Hill with the announcement that they have shut down their operational center in the United Kingdom and moved the center to Gibraltar. The decision comes partly as just one facet of the group’s overall intention to wholly update their diversification and structuring, and partly because of the tax advantages that the move carries. The telephone betting department is only the latest move for William Hill, which already transferred their online gambling division to the island.

The move will also be a change for the set-up for telephone betting structure, as they will now being outsourcing to a new services provider, partnering with Vertex. The company is a leading name in customer management and outsourcing, known well to be a leading global BPO. Meanwhile, WH’s old telephone betting division, the Credit Limited, will be shutting their doors permanently in the UK.

"William Hill continues to have a substantial presence in the UK and Ireland, including more than 2,300 licensed betting offices and around 16,000 employees," said a spokesman for the powerful company. "It paid GBP265 million in UK taxes and levies in 2009." There are a number of call centers whose futures are still unsure of in the UK, with one in Sheffield and yet another in Leeds. While a suggestion has been made for the Sheffield center to be run by Vertex as a back up, Leeds will definitely be closing, said the company.

Its not a cheap move, but rather a hefty investment in the company’s future, as it will cost them a good £7 million to transfer to Gibraltar. The tax savings alone, however, will make all the cost and effort worth it, with one estimate saying that anywhere from £4 to £7 million will be saved annually. In spite of William Hills recent contract with Playtech, the costs incurred with the transfer will at least be initially borne by WH, though an annual telephone betting support stipend has been agreed to by Playtech.
