An article included in this week’s
edition of the Atlantic City Weekly added an interesting new piece of the
puzzle for the developing online gambling market in New Jersey, as
apparently the land-based casinos are predicting that the legalization of
internet casinos is inevitable. Apparently, they are so sure, that even
before the bill that would overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act is debated, the casinos are going so far as to begin
negotiations with online casino software companies. The source of said information was traced back to a testimony given by Mark Juliano, speaking as President of the New Jersey Casino Association; he was speaking as part of the Legislative Summit on the gambling industry as a whole. It was Juliano, who has his hand in most of the streams of information related to Atlantic City that gave the rest of the internet gambling market a heads up as to the casinos’ surety of the situation. According to the newspaper report, Juliano’s comments were somewhat prodded by questions at the talk-back session, when he was asked to give some information as to the plans that the State of New Jersey might have for the future, naming intra-state poker as one example. Surprising his audience, Juliano instead said that it was the Association’s view that regulation of poker, online casinos, and even sports betting would be better accomplished on a federal level, rather than state. “We are all working with software programs to provide a mode for online poker rooms and casino games and were obviously watching the legislation on this very carefully,” he said. “We do think that it is inevitable that it will pass at some point and were just waiting for some legislative direction.” |
