Across the globe, money is in short
supply these days. A suggestions has been made, then, by the United
Kingdom’s government that would free up some funds without any new
taxation, affecting few residents save those who used to frequent online
casinos. A novel proposal has been put forth in regards to abandoned cash
accounts for internet gambling websites, and if it were to make it into
law, gamblers in the UK will want to keep their accounts active and uses
unless they want to lose their cash. With as much competition as exists in the online gambling industry, it should come as no surprise that many internet casinos host accounts that have been funded and used, but now sit there untouched, dormant accounts flush with money that does no one any active good. The newly elected minister for Tourism and Heritage for the UK put forth a suggestion to the rest of the fresh new Coalition government that they seize unused funds to be used by the government. Minister John Penrose has put forth a proposal that so far will ask of regulated casinos a comprehensive list of all abandoned betting accounts as well as unclaimed winnings. The report has been asked of the liberal democrat MB for Bath, don Foster, who will be responsible for the development of such a list, possibly to help lawmakers decide if its worth the cost of implementing such a law for the probable profits. Estimates being made right now put the amounts that could be made in the millions, a sum total worth the change in law. Though the definition of abandoned money has not yet been made, the ministers pushing for the proposal have said that if rightful owners can prove their claims to their old accounts, refunds can be given. Possible benefactors for the money have included a number of land based gaming venues, such as racing organizations, as well as grassroots sports projects. Foster has accepted the challenge of developing such a report, saying, “I’m delighted to be leading this project and look forward to completing it before the year is out. I’ll be meeting representatives from all parts of the industry to gain views and suggestions on how this can work. It would be great to see some local sporting facilities and initiatives getting some extra funding in these difficult financial times.” |
