Though anyone who frequents online casinos on even a marginal basis knows how popular they have become in the last few years, a perfect substitute for the cost and inconvenience of making your way to a land-based casino, it seems that internet gambling experts are predicting a surge of growth over the next four years. The resource iGaming Business has published the results of a particularly interesting study that estimates by the year 2014, the online casino industry could grow by as much as 80 percent.

The report, titled the Global Business of Online Casinos, found that by the end of the year (2010), the internet gambling market will be worth $4.7 billion across the globe, for gross gaming yield. Within two years, that number will grow to mark $5.8 billion by the end of 2012, with yield up to $7.1 billion by the end of 2014. Compared to the estimated total worth of the industry at the end of last year, 2009, it would be a growth of 79 percent.

The report is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, giving a history of the market as a whole in addition to the most current statistics on both newly launched enterprises and expanding companies. Recent trends of the most successful contributors are tracked in addition to their strategies being outlined. On average, introducing a new online casino to the market comes with a price tag of $1.5 million. The up side is the fact that launching an internet casino requires fewer employees than land-based casinos, which can cost as much as $300 to launch and begin operation.

The report also notes that even non-internet gambling companies and firms from totally unrelated fields are finding the market ever more attractive, looking for ways to get in on the action before the imminent explosion. Media companies lead the way in this drive. Social networking, mobile gaming and application as well as micro-transactions are all contributing to the increases in popularity, streamlining the industry in spite of some governments’ prohibitionary laws.
