Though the day for legalization of
online gambling in the United States is significantly closer than it has
been since the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act
in 2006, a delay has been reported behind Congress’ closed doors, causing
virtual groans of anticipation from much of the online gambling industry.
A number of factors may have contributed to the delay, though the bill
will reportedly be first on the docket when the House of Representatives’
Financial Services Committee reconvenes. A heavy calendar was the primary cause of the delay, with most internet gambling experts primed and ready to see bill HR 2267 up for debate this past week. Of the seven bills that were scheduled for debate by the Committee, two took up all the time, leaving the last three – lead by HR 2267 – will be the first on the docket when they come back, with all of the online gambling community anxious for a decision on the legalization bill. The proposal, drafted by one of the most well loved politicians by the internet gambling industry, Congressman Barney Frank, is officially titled as the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act. It is scheduled for mark up after its last successful completion. The next debate is expected to revolve around two primary concerns about legalizing internet casinos in the US. Problem gambling and underage gambling are two of the issues that conservative lawmakers continue to rely on to oppose the progressive measure, two things that can be highly prevented with effective regulation. Other concerns include organized crime and money laundering as well as the rights held by individual states to mandate what kind of gambling can be legal in their jurisdiction. |
