The most recent charity challenge has
completed this week in the internet gambling community, though because it
was exactly NOT a star-driven poker event, it is catching more attention
than one might expect. The event was hosted by Gala Coral, a leader in the
United Kingdom not only for their land-based betting venues, but in online
gambling as well. Accolades are pouring in for the success of their latest
endeavor, hosting a fund-raising challenge to benefit the Sue Ryder Care
Charity. Called the 3 Peaks Challenge, the event saw 29 of Gala Coral’s employees ante up not for a game, but rather the physical challenge of climbing three of the highest mountains in the UK, topping the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales. The hard part didn’t stop with the actual labor of climbing said mountains, the employees had to do it within a 24 hour period! Gala Coral had said that the year of 2010 would be a big year for giving for them, setting a lofty goal of raising £1.5 million throughout the year for the charity’s causes. The 3 Peaks Challenge added another £30,000 to that goal, bringing the sum total to £1.2 million with almost five whole months left in the year. The Sue Ryder organization is a service that caters to terminally ill patients throughout the UK, providing end of life and long term care services to patients suffering from illnesses such as Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and even strokes. Gala had raised significant amounts of money for the cause in 2009, breaking their annual goal of £1 million. "On behalf of Sue Ryder Care, I can't thank everybody at Gala Coral enough for their truly fantastic support,” said Paul Woodward, the CEO for the charity. “The money Gala Coral employees continue to raise enables us not only to maintain provision of care via our health and social services nationwide but to develop and grow so that we can reach out to more people. As such, with the support of money raised from Gala Coral we will continue to develop community based services that support people to live well in their own homes for as long as possible - and when the time comes, die with dignity, free of pain and in their preferred place of choice." |
