It seems that the line separating the
worlds of online gambling and live tournament poker play are getting more
and more blurred with time, as yet another internet casino fanatic stepped
up and crushed the competition in a live game. A 19-year old Austrian took
his poker play experience from internet gambling sites to the Poker Stars’
hosted Latin America Poker Tour in Brazil, winning the event from 363
other competitors, some of which were professional poker players, and many
of which are loyal to playing live games only. Mattias Habernig, a local internet poker player out of Klagenfurt, Austria managed to win his seat at the Brazil edition of the tournament through an online casino satellite tournament, turning his small bets into a $247,441 cash prize. His intent to take it all was apparent very early on, with Habernig taking the tourney lead early in the first day, and his refusal to give it up til the very end. The game unfolded at the Costao de Santiago resort, near Florianopolis, Brazil. For those not flying in from Austria with a free ticket, the buy-in cost competitors $2,500, accruing a total of 364 players. The final table was a myriad of nationalities, including Habernig, as well as Alex Martins, Dayan Vardanega, Rudy Blondeau, Rodrigo Scartezini, Roberto Kozan, Andre Scaff and Miguel Velasco. When the final players were seated, Habernig already held half of the chips, and continued to dominate the play, relatively easily until the final heads up against Dayan Varganega, which took place of five exciting hours. He kept his 4 to 1 chip lead throughout, but Varganega did his best to unman him, coming close at least once. He walked away from the game with a consolation prize of $143,174. |
