The progress of the proposed interstate internet poker initiative in California has an update available this week as the Morongo Band of Indians recently gained the competition of 21 other tribes, each of which are vying for exclusive operation rights to the bill. As if the measure didn’t have enough blockages to contend with, each of the tribes are working with the same concerns – that legalization of any form of online gambling, even just poker, would have seriously detrimental effects on their bottom line for land-based casinos.

Previously, the Morongo tribe were the ones desperately fighting for exclusive rights to operate the project, an idea that has apparently caught on with other groups who want in on the revenue generated. The Morongo, however, have been on both sides of the fence, with their first reaction to the proposed intrastate poker idea being vehement opposition, until their tune changed from ‘never, ever’ to ‘only if we’re in charge.’

A statement was issued this week from the band, courtesy of Patrick Dorinson, who said that 21 other tribes had signed on to the consortium. Whether the agreement falls through in negotiations of who gets what share of the power has yet to be seen, but few examples have been set by online gambling companies cooperating to share in millions of dollars of potential profits. “We have 21 tribes at this point,” said Dorinson. “We anticipate by the end of the day we will have quite a few more. He added that some of the tribes involved had substantial gaming [interests] in the state.”

Called the California Inter-Tribal Intra-State Poker Consortium, the grouping is one of two LLC organizations that will be members of the California Online Poker Association (COPA). Of course, all of the information is completely contingent upon the passage of the proposal by the state government, an issue that is by no means simple, and has been under consideration for the last three years, with no definite answer yet given.
