Just as California is known as one of the more progressive states in the Union, Washington State has a reputation for being one of the strictest in terms of enforcement for internet gambling laws. True to form, another piece of news comes out of the north western territory this week, exemplifying once again the dedication officials have to ensuring internet gambling is absolutely not tolerated, as police went after a site that supposedly was accepting bets related to Nascar events. The story was first broken by the local news station KXLY, who reported that the Washington State Gambling Commission had laid its sight on yet another victim, arresting a man from Spokane Valley that officials believed to be behind an online gambling site focused on Nascar bets. According to the reports, the site wasn’t a national operation, and held little threat, but had the unfortunate base in one of the most draconian states in the US. Thousands of dollars have been paid out on the small scale site in the last ten years, all of which, however, are illegal in the state of Washington. David Watkins was the operator of the site, and the focus of a raid last week by officials, the end to a long standing investigation into the online gambling website Fantasy Thunder.com. The site’s been up and running for about ten years, with Watkins behind its success, running the fantasy Nascar betting site from his home. While investigators were building their case, unfortunately for Watkins, a few unhappy former customers came to their aid, fueled by complaints that Watkins didn’t process their payments correctly. One such person, James Marks, claimed that Watkins owed him $3,730 for winning bets on the Fantasy Thunder site. He wasn’t the only one, with a team of persons stepping forward to help bring the Fantasy Thunder site down. In an ironic twist, because the officials are working from a wholly anti-internet gambling position, they have said that no monies will be repaid to any of the demanding parties, as all the bets are illegal in the state of Washington. The site has already been taken offline. |
