As mid-April becomes current day, the final date for the enforcement of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act looms darkly just around the corner. June 1st is about six weeks away, and some in the online gambling world are wondering if the politicians in Washington DB will be able to pull their acts together fast enough to legalize internet casinos, or at the very least, extend the date once again – before its too late. There are a number of groups that are actively working for the passage of the laws, with the Poker Players Alliance among them. This week, the PPA makes headlines as the organization looks to some unlikely sources for support in passing an exception clause for poker for the UIGEA. The Poker News Daily reported on an interview with the PPA’s executive director, John Pappas, as he confirmed that they had extended the hand of cooperation to Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona, one man who has developed a reputation as being the arch-enemy of the online gambling initiative. It would do little to help most of the internet gambling industry, but the exemption clause would protect one game – that of poker. And Pappas says that they need the cooperation and support of Kyl to pass the addendum. Pushing the envelope, the clause would also protect dog and horse racing from the UIGEA restrictions, an important issue as the June 1 date fast approaches. “I don’t think it comes down to Kyl having an axe to grind with poker players,” said Pappas. “I think he’d be open to a legislative solution, but he wants to get his law enforced. It’s not going to have any effect on those who wish to miscode transactions and those who are not the most upstanding actors. They’ll continue to operate without fear of this law and players will continue to be able to wager on those sites.” |
