Some more online gambling news comes out of the US this week as the third oldest news publication in the nation teams up in a partnership that will link it to the growing internet gaming community. The Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that it has entered into a deal with fantasy sports provider Fan Duel.com in their latest marketing attempt to gain not only exposure, but revenue. The move is progressive, if nothing else, as it will make the Inquirer’s website, Philly.com, the first online news site to offer up access to fantasy sports gaming through their domain. Daily fantasy sports games will hopefully catch the public’s attention, and business, bringing in some much needed revenue. The idea isn’t entirely new, however, as it’s already been used in the European online gambling market, where real bets take the fantasy sports to a new level. The same idea will apply here in the US, for Philly, at least, with millions of dollars expected to be generated through the program. Fan Duel seemed to be a perfect fit for Philly.com, as they’ve been operating since November of 2007, and perfecting the science of fantasy gaming ever since. Their first game was launched as a completely free, recreational version in 2008. The latest beta versions host not only ‘play money’ versions, but real money as well, allowing punters an opportunity to build a team, play a game, and win their victory prizes all in one day. It’s an exceptional exception, taking advantage of the small loophole built into the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 that says that instant fantasy games are permittable on US soil. Fan Duel will be paid on a commission basis, depending upon the popularity and use of their game on the Philly.com website. |
