The online gambling community saw the conclusion of the Paddy Power Poker Irish Open this week, with the grand prize title being taken home by James Mitchell. It had been the hope that an Irishman would have been able to win the event, but that expectation was dashed with the win by Mitchell, a professional poker player from the UK. The British youth, aged at just 20 years, managed to hold out against an impressive field of 708 other poker enthusiasts, with representatives from both the live tournament circuit and the online gambling community showing their colors on the Emerald Isle.

His efforts were quite profitable, as he was able to turn his buy-in price to €600,000. Mitchell went up against the likes of Dan Harrington, Sandra Naujoks, Brian Townsend, Kara Scott, Marty Smyth, Neil Channing, Andy Black, Marty Wilson, Liam Flood, Ross Boatman and snooker ace Ken Doherty on his journey to the final table. The last nine players seated, competing for the glory were Mitchell, Paul Carr, Santeri Valikoski, Rob Sherwood, Ben Roberts, Edmund Sweeney, Declan Connolly, Peter Murphy and Yann Dion.

Third place was taken by Valikoski, himself out of Finland, sent home with his cash prize by Mitchell. That left just Paul Carr in the way of Mitchell’s destiny, a honorable pairing, with some exciting hands keeping the attention of the internet gambling railbirds. Carr lost in the end, walking away with a consolation prize of €312,600. The prize pot generated by the 708 original applicants created enough cash to furnish six six-figure prizes, extending down to Edmund Sweeney.
