While at first glance it might seem that the online gambling industry is a relatively simple world to both join and succeed in, truth be told the nuances of rules, regulations and overall tape can discourage even the most innovative would-be contributors. And the difficulties are not always originating with stubborn governments trying to get their share of the taxes; this story in particular gives fair warning to groups to pay attention to the copyrights and liberties that need to paid for across the board.

According to reports this week, Global Draw Limited found itself in some trouble with the Business Software Alliance after failing to pay some licensing fees. The group, based out of Middlesex in the United Kingdom, is a subsidiary of the Scientific Games group, one of the growing names in the internet gambling community. Their recent contributions to the online casino world came largely as a result of successful partnership contracts signed with larger firms, such as Playtech.

This week, Global Draw found themselves on the unfriendly side of a £25,000 fine, having failed to pay for a sufficient number of Microsoft software licenses. Business Software Alliance, which works together to protect programming companies from piracy, filed the motion against the online gambling company, claiming that their failure to properly purchase and register software would result in a fine. The BSA ordered them not only to legally buy £25,000 worth of software, but to also pay a £20,000 fine for their oversight.

The head of the BSA, Michala Wardell, defended the decision, saying that it was a necessary means to enforcement. “Disregarding intellectual property laws to chase cost savings in the short-term will always lead to more harm than good. In the current economic climate, businesses cannot afford unnecessary risks which could far exceed the initial outlay of licensed software,” she said.
