Yet another high profile poker tournament has been won not by an experienced, older pro, but rather by a youthful face on the scene, adding to the number of events taken by fresh poker stars. Many of the names who continue to make headlines in the poker circles are transports, making the switch from the internet casino world to the live tournament circuit, expanding their game, and gaining the experience they need to more effectively play the pros that have been around for years, even decades.

The latest win was at the North American Poker Tour’s Mohegan Sun’s stop. The Tour, hosted by the online gambling group Poker Stars, is in its inaugural year, exploring for the first time the North American continent, bringing high profile tournament events to the US, Canada, and even Mexico. Jason Mercier, who made his initial fortune and name in the internet casino world, managed to win the game, turning his $5,000 buy-in into a profit of $475,000.

The 23-year did have a bit of a challenge standing between him and the title, as some of the biggest names in poker are taking full advantage of their close proximity to the North American Tour. Mercier’s final check for $475,000 was made up of $350,000 for his first placing, a $60,000 prize for winning the first round, and another $40,000 in bounties. The final $25,000 came in the form of an entry to the next High Roller event on the Tour cycle.

Mercier originally won his entry through a prize, taking the first place in a Mohegan Sun satellite event. The cash win brings the player’s total career winnings up to an impressive $4.8 million, including titles from the European Poker Tour’s High Roller events, as well as the World Series of Poker. He championed over Sam Stein, Matt Glantz, Shawn Buchanan, Faraz Jaka, and Luis Vazquez; each of the other players brought at least 2 bounties to the table with him.
