New Hampshire Governor Reconsiders

According to a surprising new report by the New Hampshire local newspaper, the Nashua Telegraph, the chance of legalizing at least one branch of online gambling in the eastern state has become a sincere possibility, as the state becomes ever more desperate to find new government funds without raising taxes on their residents. State Governor John Lynch has supposedly been confirmed to reconsider the legalization offer for the region, though nothing definitive as to his opinion has yet been gleaned.

The Nashua Telegraph said that it wouldn’t be until later in the spring season that the Governor would be ready to unveil his solutions for the financial crisis hitting the state, but Colin Manning, the Governor’s spokesman did say that the legalization of internet gambling was one of the considered options under debate.

New Hampshire is rather a rare bird in terms of gambling issues as many of the politicians agree that the proliferation of gambling – in any form – is something to be actively prevented, Lynch included. To that end, the Governor recently opposed a measure that would have allowed slot machines and casino gambling to be installed in six different locations throughout his state; another much debated bill is currently in the House that would permit 17,000 slot machines to be installed, as well as table games – a measure that most believe has only a slight chance in being passed.

So its more than a little confusing, and some would say, suspicious that the Governor’s office would consider legalization of online gambling as an option, as it would, by definition, expand the accessibility of gambling in New Hampshire. The reasons for legalization are clear: American gamblers bet away as much as $8 billion a year through internet gambling sites, accounting for half of the monies spent on the industry every year. Since New Hampshire has no law against the industry, it’s a market that they would be wise to tap into.

One of the main voices of opposition is expected to be that of Senator Bob Clegg, who currently is lobbying on behalf of the Green Meadom Golf Club, an organization that has hopes of opening a land-based casino in the city of Hudson. Online gambling would take business away from that potential venture, giving Senator Clegg reason to object. Regardless, his office has been able to confirm Governor Lynch’s recent visits with state lottery commissioners.
