It seems that the legalization of online gambling in one form or another is truly becoming a worldwide phenomenon, ad even the smallest principalities are finding means to make available legal versions of the games that their constituents enjoy so much. The latest country to jump on the bandwagon is that of Goa, to whose government was submitted nine applications for an online gambling license.

Goa had opened up the opportunity to become licensed once before, though at that time, not one company came forward, interested in the terms required. The revamp of the mandate has been received much better, as nine firms have already submitted their tender applications to run an online lottery geared towards Goa residents. The small, formerly Portuguese territory on the West side of India has confirmed that they've opened up a tender process on providing online lottery services, but declined to comment further on how the success of the impending new program might have on the opinion of other Internet gambling products, such as poker, slots, and bingo.

At the application period's closure, nine firms had submitted their proposals, though no details have yet been provided about which companies applied. The Goa Herald reported that the Department of Lotteries had viewed the new online lottery system as a good option to generate new tax revenue. The funds are much needed as the country has seen a dramatic increase in spending over the last few years. One source said that the government is hoping to generate Rs 22-25 crore from the enterprise every year.

The Herald reported that Goa opened up a tender process for an online lottery system two years ago, with no success at all. The current circumstances under which a license will be awarded this time around are significantly more attractive, accounting for the difference in responses. In 2008, the government had looked for a private company to run the program, who would have paid a one-time payment of Rs 25 crore in addition to a share of all the income made by the venture. Those terms have since been revised.
