With news this week of France finally liberalizing their online gambling market, opening up to foreign and offshore Internet casino operators, as well as the announcement that the government of Goa was pursuing the installation of an online lottery platform, the growth of the industry seems to be in full swing this April, as yet another nation demonstrates the success of their online gambling market with a study on the popularity of poker. The latest numbers have become available from the Czech Republic, showing that the number of poker players in the region has grown to as many as 200,000, as Internet poker becomes more popular with residents. The growth of poker over the last year has been incredible, reported the Prague Daily Monitor this week. According to the article, the game has been highlighted in recent months with the victory by Czech Jan Skampa at the Prague event of the European Poker Tour last December. The win came as a surprise to nearly all of the internet gambling community, as the 23-year was only a student of economics, who took the tournament by storm and walked away with €682,000 to show for it. There is a growing community of Czech professional poker players, who earn thousands of dollars every month in income from live tournaments as well as online casino play. Even those who don’t win in the big leagues can make for themselves a comfortable living on less, as the Czech is still developing and remarkably affordable for most needs. The growth in popularity in poker has resulting in 160 poker clubs throughout the nation, with some of the larger ones in the city of Prague boasting as many as 2,000 members. There are rooms available for tournaments, and traditional casinos make sure to facilitate the growing community with a variety of games. |
