In a surprising twist, apparently the United States does give a care about the fate of the internet, as a statement makes its way through the online gambling community forums that report a State Department representative giving the government’s official position on Australia’s pending internet censorship program as opposition. According to an Australian publication called The Punch, known for their political debate, sport and entertainment content, the unspoken parallels drawn between the Americans and Australians on issues such as public freedom of speech and the internet are causing a bit of a disagreement over the new censorship plans as the move ahead down under.

The Australian government’s attempts to set up a censorship program have been in the internet gambling news for months for despite the authorities’ reassurances that there are no definitive intentions to block online casinos as of now, the groundwork for prohibition against the industry is clearly being laid, giving plenty of cause to concern for the betting markets. The latest arguments arising from the Obama administration originally had nothing to do with the Australian plans, but instead were triggered by existing issues with allowing freedom on the internet in China.

As a result, the State Department is on a mission to do what it can to encourage an open internet policy worldwide, though it’s hardly expected that Communist China will be cooperative. Given their cooperation on most policies, however, Australia is a point of contention, as opposition grows more fierce against the plans for censorship. A spokesman for the State Department, Noel Clay, made the statement to The Punch, saying, “The US and Australia are close partners on issues related to cyber matters generally, including national security and economic issues. We do not discuss the details of specific diplomatic exchanges, but [I] can say that in the context of that ongoing relationship, we have raised our concerns on this matter with Australian officials."
