The arguments arising out of Australia in relation to changes to their online gambling industry are picking up again this month, with a study hitting the scene courtesy of the internationally respected business services group, KPMG. According to their estimations, the Aussie government might want to take into consideration the proclivities of the typical internet gambling consumer, who they predict will be more likely to gamble in foreign and offshore online casinos should the government choose to stay their course. The losses, if that should happen, would mean tens of millions of dollars in losses from taxes alone. The KPMG report was dutifully passed along to the internet gambling community by iTWire, who said that Anthony Travers spoke on the matter. The report, titled ‘Online Gambling: A Gamble or Sure Bet?’ predicted that unless Australia acknowledge and join the movement that sees more acceptance for the legalization of internet casinos, they could be among those that lose out on the millions in profits from taxes. In 2008, the study says, as much as A$790 million was spent on offshore gambling. The reason? Australia continue to enforce the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001, resulting in ridiculous wealth being spent on offshore sites. Travers proclaimed that there was no doubt that unless the government of Australia chose to pick up on the trends and jump on the bus, the money lost would certainly increase in the coming years, a potential thrown away on an antiquated law. It’s not the money, said Travers, “In addition there would be scant protection for people using the overseas sites, especially problem gamblers.” Because Australia has a law against online gambling (preventing their government from profiting in most provinces) the enforcement of the law in terms of prosecuting gamblers is non-existent, giving players no reason not to access offshore sites. In fact, Travers wasn’t aware of any cases where it had been used. “Prohibition does not work,” he said, “We expect to see the regions relax, with appropriate controls put in place, and we expect further growth.” |
